CLAN TYPE:-- Kekkei Genkai VILLAGE:-- Scattered, mostly Kirigakure and Kumogakure ORIGIN: -- Mizu no Kuni/Kōri no Kuni CLAN HISTORY: -- A clan which formerly controlled most of the outlying islands of Mizu no Kuni, the Yuki clan has become a shell of its former glory. The once large clan has become small and scattered after decades of infighting and civil war. Their bloody wars ravaged any land they were on, taking them as far as Kaminari no Kuni and inland Mizu no Kuni. Often times their battles lead to a high civilian body count. This made the clan fairly infamous, and forced other clans to fight against them, as a means to protect themselves. Most of the clan members were killed in this fighting, and what remnant there are have fled and scattered across the globe, taking refuge in high mountains of any land they could. Some two hundred years ago, the first members of the clan came together. Originally they were a small group of people, who came from a large, frozen island within the archipelago of Kaminari no Kuni. They had been native to the island since before recorded history, and remained undiscovered for most of their early existence. Though the island was large, their numbers were not. As such, they did not interact very much with one another unless necessary. Their Kekkei Genkai, which gave the the ability to manipulate and control ice and snow, did not surface until about two hundred thirty years ago, first appearing in a young girl, whose name has long since been lost to time. The full story of her history is also largely lost, all that is known is that she would eventually become the person who brought the clan together, and that she bore three children; a son and two daughters. Her son, the eldest, was born without the clan’s Kekkei Genkai, which came to be known a Hyōton (Ice Release). Her two daughters were both born with the ability. The three of them would eventually marry off, and each bear a daughter, among other children. Each of the daughters had the Hyōton ability, but none of the sons. It soon became accepted that the ability was exclusive to the women of the clan, as such the clan formed a matriarchal structure. A hundred years after the birth of the clan founder, finally a son was born with the ability to use Hyōton, he was given the name Harunohana (Spring Flower). Another son with the ability would not be born for another hundred years. Before the bloody civil war broke out, the Yuki were a prestigious and highly respected clan. They had complete control of the outlying islands within Mizu no Kuni stretching all the way to the archipelago just outside of Kaminari no Kuni, and controlled much of the trade that came in and out of its ports. They called their territory Kōri no Kuni (Land of Ice), and were respected as their own sovereign nation. They possessed a large fleet of ships, and traded between themselves as well as the people of Mizu and Kaminari no Kuni. They were a small, yet extremely wealthy clan. However, it was not their wealth for which they were respected, but rather their awesome naval strength. Their ships were not simply trading vessels, but battle ships, which they used to protect their cargo, and the cargo of anyone willing to pay the right price. Each ship was equipped with massive canons, but no cannon balls or gunpowder; rather they used their clan’s Kekkei Genkai, Hyōton, to launch giant, spiked balls of of ice. As well, their ships were armed with smaller cannons used to shoot spikes of ice in rapid succession. They were both feared and respected, sometimes referred to as little more than pirates. Upon the birth of the second son with the ability to use Hyōton, the clan became split. On one side were those who wished to preserve the traditional ways of the clan, on the other, those who wished to replace the matriarchal structure. Though all out fighting did not take place at first, the discourse between the two sides often almost ended in violence. After a particularly brutal debate, the second son was kidnapped by the anti-traditionalists and held hostage. Though, they did not actually want any sort of ransom for him. Instead, they were interested in discovering how he was able to use his powers, and to discover a way to allow all the men of the clan the ability to use Hyōton. The kidnapping of the second son lead to all out civil war between the Traditionalists and the Anti-traditionalists, and at first it was more so a one-sided bloodbath. Then, something of a miracle occurred, and the Anti-traditionalists discovered how to tap into the latent power within them to use Hyōton. From then on, one in ten sons possessed the ability to use Hyōton/ The battling continued for nearly a decade, and eventually a peace agreement was reached in which a coequal clan system was created. Though the clan head was still a matriarch, there too existed a sub-head patriarch. Though the agree was made, it was not made in good faith, as the Anti-traditionalists were more so outnumbered and incapable of continuing their battle. They were forced into the treaty, with the ultimatum of death. This caused a great, bust largely silent, schism within the clan. The two factions never actually ceased to exist, and for years afterwards the plotted against one another. Until one day, when a rogue Anti-traditionalist, now calling themselves Neo-progressivists, attacked and killed the clan matriarch. This cause a shock among the entire clan, and spurred them directly into another civil war across their entire territory. The fighting would last them decades, and often see each side pitted against different clans from the different nations. Their numbers grew smaller and smaller until they were all but extinct. The distinct sides within the clan has crumbled to nothing more than a family fude. Each side realized they were now too small, and that any further fighting would cause both sides to be completely eliminated by the larger clans; so they set off, scattering to the furthest reaches of the globe. Their nation was no one, their navy was in shambles, and their name had become cursed, known as Chimamire no Yuki (Bloody Snow). The clan was now two distinctive clans under the same name. One clan retained the matriarchal structure and remained within Kaminari no Kuni and the outlying archipelago. The other, much smaller clan, in Mizu no Kuni and its islands. The Mizu no Yuki would quickly go on to become actively involved with the politics of the nation, while the Kaminari no Yuki would do the opposite, and remain a mostly secluded entity within the country. Though the clans to vastly different paths, each clan become fully accustomed to the society of the nation they lived in. Apart from the two main clans, there also existed a third, much smaller, clan called the Mu Kuni no Yuki. These were the clan members who became scattered in the different regions of the world, typically taking refuge in the mountainous regions of nations far to the west. They existed as nomads, traveling the world and offering their services to whoever needed them. CLAN IDEOLOGY: -- As there is not one single clan, there is not one single clan ideology. Rather, there are three distinctive belief systems: The Mizu no Yuki are a largely individualistic clan, and do not possess a concrete ideology. The only belief of theirs is the idea that they will eventually return to their former glory, and a general distrust of outsiders. Outside of that, each member is generally different from the other, without much sense of unity or comradery. The Kaminari no Yuki, as is typical with their history, are the opposite of the Mizu no Kuni. They are unified under the clan matriarch, and hold generally traditional views that have not changed in over a hundred years. The women of the clan are in general stronger and perform all of the governing aspects of the clan, while the men are expected to perform the manual labor in most cases. The Mu Kuni no Yuki are too spread out and disorganized to have any sort of ideology, being more individualistic than the Mizu no Yuki. CLAN ABILITIES: -- Hyōton (Ice Release) is the combined nature transformation kekkei genkai of the Yuki clan. It allows the user to freely create and manipulate ice by simultaneously combining wind and water-based chakra. When the user releases their chakra, the surrounding vicinity becomes cold enough to cause snow to fall. CLAN HIERARCHY: -- Only two of the three clans have a hierarchy, with the Mu Kuni no Yuki being entirely anarchistic. The Mizu no Yuki have a democratically elected clan leader, who is almost totally subordinate to the clan council, with only the power of final decision. The Kaminari no Yuki are autocratic but democratically elected from amongst the eldest daughters of the clan upon the death of the current matriarch. The clan matriarch has final decision power as well as the ability to make the most important decisions for the clan. This leaves the council as merely the mouthpiece for the matriarch. The Kaminari no Yuki matriarch is essentially a benevolent dictator for life.
