Specialty System
When it comes to character balance, Rebellion attempts to make it as individual and detailed as possible. This manifests in your character's application as the specialty section. The member will describe their characters skill in their specific art of combat [ninjutsu, Taijutsu, Genjutsu, etc] within the section. Additionally, the specs section is where one would mention the overall physique such their strength, speed, chakra control or chakra supply. It should be noted that not every character will be awesomely strong or be super fast. That said characters tend to have one or the other when it comes to certain physical and chakra attributes. This isn't to say someone can’t be fast and strong or durable and fast. No, staff just ask that you keep within your character’s fighting style and build. A person who is super quick, nimble and agile wouldn't be tanking hits[without a jutsu] or a Shinobi with large unruly chakra pools wouldn't be just controlling his chakra in order to make intricate structures. Here’s an example;
Jiraiya was born with innate talent in both ninjutsu and Taijutsu. Since becoming a Genin, he's trained both these skills to official Shinobi level. Because Jiraiya is geared towards ninjutsu and taijutsu his skills with both these forms of combat are considered what's required of newly appointed Shinobi. However, due to him spending more time on these skills he's consider below average in other areas such as Genjutsu.
As stated earlier, your Shinobi’s physique and chakra information will also go into this section. It should be noted that you're area of expertise in shinobi combat will directly effect your physique, such as Taijutsu users being faster than non-taijutsu specialist or medic-nin and genjutsu users having better chakra control than others. example of this is;
Due to Jiraiya being trained in Taijutsu. His speed and strength[not counting a special ability] is above those of his rank who isn't a taijutsu specialist. His training in ninjutsu has earned him better chakra control[if the member had decided to go with chakra supply instead of control then Jiraiya would’ve been born with his high amounts of chakra whereas control is gained through training] which allows him to use the minimum amount of chakra needed for jutsu. Lastly his endurance has also been honed to a certain degree thanks to his Tai training. [Members are allowed to pick between what physical aspect is greater than the other so long as it doesn't exceed their general rank. That said Genin wouldn't be as durable, fast or strong as a chunin, without some type of aid]
When choosing your skill set there are certain rules one must follow to regulate the power structure of starting ninja. We believe that this system is the best way to show those intricate difference between these choices while allowing for level play and equal chance to advance for everyone. This thread will show the rules for each of the different archetypes that people can choose from. Those being the Sole specialization, the Dual Specialization, and the Jack of all Trades. It should be stated that your overall skill does not dictate what jutsu you may or may not start with. The thing that dictates this is your rank and the jutsu limitations. It also does not dictate which jutsu you can learn. However, it does dictate your skill in said field.
The Common Ninja Arts Ninjutsu
Ninjutsu (忍術; "Ninja Techniques") is a form of combat that is defined by the use and materialization of chakra outside of the body to create physical effects, which can range from something as easy as defying gravity to stick to a wall to something as difficult as creating a vast lake of water. The ability to use Ninjutsu is heavily influenced by a person's chakra control and their ability to manipulate Shape Transformation and/or Nature Transformation to produce powerful and effective techniques. These categories of control are typically represented by a shinobi's fluency in hand seal formation, as those with great aptitude can lower the needed hand seals in a technique or disregard hand seals all together, performing techniques at will.
Genjutsu
Genjutsu (幻術; "Illusionary Techniques") is a form of combat defined by the use of chakra to manipulate the flow of chakra in an opponent's brain. This is done by projecting ones chakra toward a person and then extending its flow into the target(s)'s cerebral nervous system, which can be done through several methods: this is the mechanic behind all Genjutsu. Because Genjutsu affects the "prosencephalon structure" however, it is unable to affect insects. While Genjutsu has been described in canon as falling into the broad category of Inton (陰遁; "Yin Release"), there is a difference. Whereas Genjutsu creates illusions within the mind of the targeted, Inton creates illusions within actual reality, giving form to thought and imagination. Essentially, this makes Inton illusions quasi-tangible. That being said, you should only have Inton as a release if it follows this characteristic. However, as Inton creates illusions, and powerful illusions at that, it is unavailable to those without great skill within the field of Genjutsu. Also, do not expect to be physically oriented in your abilities either (unless you have a relatively Taijutsu specialty).
Taijutsu
Taijutsu (体術; "Body Techniques") is a form of combat that focuses on a shinobi's physical abilities. Unlike Ninjutsu and Genjutsu, Taijutsu does not use chakra; rather, it relies on a person's stamina, which is built up through physical training. Practitioners of Taijutsu also tend to be skilled in the use of weapons, as it is common for hand-to-hand combat to include weaponry lessons. That being said, if you have a high skill in Taijutsu, it is very possible for you to wield, for example, a sword with proficiency comparable to a Bukijutsu specialist. Taijutsu can also be combined with Ninjutsu to form Nintaijutsu, but this requires that one have both a high Ninjutsu specialty and a high Taijutsu specialty, and it will effectively lower the proficiency with other specialties. As Taijutsu also incorporates the body, the body's condition, and a person's physical abilities, this is where exceptional, physical abilities to your character will fall under. However, this does not justify anything that is "wtfoutofthisworld", so don't be surprised if you're asked to tone it down.
Fūinjutsu
Fūinjutsu (封印術; "Sealing Techniques") are a type of jutsu that seal objects, living beings, chakra, along with a wide variety of other things within another object. Fūinjutsu can also be used to restrict movement or unseal objects either from within something or someone. One must invest time within this specialty to be able to use things such as summoning scrolls as well as jutsu like Summoning: Lightning Flash Blade Creation. Also even just having knowledge of how to release items from scrolls will enable you to utilize scrolls in battle however you would need to find someone to restock the scrolls for you ICly.
Iryō Ninjutsu
Medical Ninjutsu (医療忍術, Iryō Ninjutsu, Literally meaning: Medical Ninja Techniques) is a branch of ninjutsu associated with healing, as well as the manipulation of their own, or another's body, practised by shinobi categorised as "medical-nin". The use of medical ninjutsu requires very advanced chakra control, as well as extensive knowledge on such things as herbs, medicines, the human body and even poisons..
Bukijutsu
Bukijutsu (武器術; "Weapon Techniques") is a form of combat that focuses on the use of weapons to bring about a shinobi's desired outcome. For the most part, Bukijutsu goes hand in hand with Taijutsu, as it requires dexterity and physical training to use weapons, and it encompasses things such as Bōjutsu, Kyūjutsu, and Tessenjutsu. There are, however, two branches of Bukijutsu that are very common among shinobi that do not require a specific specialization. The first is Shurikenjutsu and the second is Kenjutsu. That being said, every shinobi has access to these two to some extent, and they can be used as special abilities so long as it makes sense. Without being a special ability though, the skills in these two areas can never match a master and will typically be average. Even if they are listed in the abilities though, the staff reserve the right to request that it be toned down if it seems like too much.
The Archetypes
Sole Specialization(SS)
Those that choose the path of Sole specialization are those that gravitate to one of the specialties more so than they gravitate to the others. Because of this they have trained extensively at their craft, making their specific specialty stronger than average. For example;
a sole Taijutsu user's physical prowess would be better than a Shinobi with Tai/Nin as a duel spec character. Reason being is that the latter divided his training between two Shinobi arts whereas the first Shinobi only focused on one art.
Sole specialization is not without its drawback, because they have spent so much time training just the one specialty the other will falter. As such their skill in other areas of combat for a sole specialization would be considered one rank below their ninja rank. For example;
a Jōnin with a sole specialization in Ninjutsu will have ninjutsu skills comparable to that of village leaders but be Genin level in their other shinobi skills. This drawback doesn’t effect physique, the ninjutsu user would be as durable, fast and strong as an average jounin. Not taking into account special abilities of course, which could very well increase one of these skills. A quick example of this is the sole ninjutsu user in this example could have an endurance SA that would reduce the impact of having trained only in ninjutsu
Dual Specialization(DS)
This archetype decided to focus on two aspects of combat, though neither will be as good as the sole specialization. The primary Shinobi art they focus on will be the same skill level of their rank, while their secondary art of combat without be one skill level below their rank with the rest following suit. That being said, the drawbacks of being DS are similar to that of being SS though not to the same extent. For example;
a Jōnin with a DS of Ninjutsu and Taijutsu would have ninjutsu skills on par with jounin and Taijutsu skills on par with chunin, with other skills following the same pattern.
Jack of all Trades(JoaT)
The term jack of all trades is synonymous with being relatively good at everything. This also happens to be the case within Rebellion as well, as a JoaT character will have kept their training equal, because of this their skill within the Shinobi arts will all be one level below their actual rank. However this is not without its own drawbacks as because all their specialties were trained equally they generally have weaker special abilities that are geared towards certain field of expertise though this is not always the case. For example;
a Jōnin whom is a JoaT will have Chunin ranked skill in all Shinobi combat however, the users physique and chakra prowess such as enhanced chakra pool, enhanced speed, etc, would all be weaker than the likes of a SS or DS as they spent more time cultivating the abilities.
Advancing the Specialties
Advancing the Specialties is a lot like the Training and Development thread. Which is to say that there are two separate ways to go about advancing your Specialties. The first being the traditional method where one uses exp the amount of exp can be be found within the training and development thread. Also within the training and development thread can be found the requirements for the second method which is to role play it out the specific post count and word count is displayed within the training and development thread.
