Shouki Clan |
CLAN TYPE: Hiden VILLAGE: Iwagakure ORIGIN: Tsuchi no Kuni CLAN HISTORY: -- During the days before the great wars that would result in the villages the Shouki served the people as capable healers. They traded their skills to other Clans for whatever they needed. It went on like that for some time. They became masters of Medical Ninjutsu and relied on the knowledge of natural herbs to amplify their talents. However, when conflict and war broke out something changed within the Shouki. Their abilities to heal made them ideal targets for other Clans who hoped to force them into working for them during the battles that raged across the world. It was this perceived weakness that forced the Clan to change themselves The Shouki transitioned their focus sculpting their knowledge specifically to those herbs that inflicted harm to others. The Clan used the wars to get their hands on no shortage of test subjects for their poisons. However, when subjects were not available they tested the poisons on themselves. The Clan even went so far as to change their name to the Shouki, the Miasma, stripping their old name from their oral history to signify this new era. It is difficult to say how much time passed before the change occurred among the Shouki. What is known though is that testing on themselves caused a curious side effect. The people of the Shouki found their bodies changing, adapting. Whether the drugs they created mutated their bodies or the threat of extinction by self-poisoning caused the clan to adapt is unknown. The poisons that once killed or harmed their people no longer did so. Instead the Shouki found that with the use of Chakra they could manipulate poisons inside their body and use it against their foes. This revelation caused them to study and rely on poisons even more so. They found ways to utilize these poisons even for interrogation and torture. They also devised a style of Taijutsu that could become a deadly combination with their newfound abilities. That is how the Clan progressed for the years to follow. Although not spoken aloud it is even a tradition to train Shouki children to resist torture and to learn how to torture while they are within the academy. There have been more than a few children who could not withstand the mental pressures put on them and “broke”, leaving them unusable by the clan. These circumstances have limited the population of the clan, but have not made it extinct. Ultimately the Clan only resigned themselves to allying with other Clans when they recognized the advent of the new village system. They understood that attempting to remain conservative in this regard would only result in their potential destruction. In the end they allied themselves with the Kage of the country they been home to. Having been recognized for something beyond their medical techniques they have since positioned themselves to aid the village whenever possible. The clan will always come first, but in the few short years since the system's implementation the village has become second. The Clan is kept in check by a high infant mortality rate within the clan. Whatever is going on with the Shouki it is clear that the utilization of their chakra to store poison may be inadvertently effecting childbirth. Pregnant women are treated with much care and are often forbidden from participating in any sort of mission from the moment they aim to conceive so as not to potentially harm any child before they get a chance to begin to grow and for the parent to show signs of the new life growing inside them. CLAN IDEOLOGY: -- Clan Is All Clan loyalty is at the absolute top of their ideology. Before anything else comes clan. The village is a fairly new concept; loyalty to a Kage is a fairly new system. For the longest time they only had themselves to rely upon. Being pulled on from all sides left them only to trust themselves. Any sort of division amongst their clan could lead to devastation for them. It was only their selflessness that allowed them to discover their abilities with poison and find a new direction for the clan outside medical jutsu. That selflessness has to persist if the clan is to continue to survive and thrive. Thus all children are instructed to put the clan before themselves. They must undergo the brutal lessons of poisons, to harm their bodies and train themselves in dangerous arts, all for the good of the clan. If the clan wasn’t so important then what they had gone through, what they expected of their children would all be for naught. Mercy Breeds Weakness If there is one lesson the Shouki have taken to heart over the years it is that mercy is a flaw that must be weeded out of their clan. It was their mercy that painted them a target for other clans. Their desire to heal others and attempt to avoid inflicting pain that made them suffer so much pain themselves. Thus, mercy cannot be allowed. One cannot hesitate because even a second’s hesitation may result in not just the death of a clan member, but the failure of the mission. Shouki clansmen are indoctrinated at a young age and shaped to ignore thoughts of mercy. The wars are still fresh enough that the Shouki have been trained only to trust their fellow clansmen and their fellow villagers. Anyone outside of those two things may be an ally today, but an enemy tomorrow. One must then act and treat these individuals accordingly so as to ensure that any order to kill will be followed without question. Orders Are Absolute Whether it is clan order or village order they must be followed through in their entirety. The mentality to follow one’s order and perform one’s duty without question helps to support their views on mercy. If a clan member is allowed to become freethinking he may come to question their ideology on mercy. If that were to happen they would not only be a danger to themselves, but others. To follow one’s orders without question also helps reinforce the elevated status they put on their own clan. The clan must come before personal wellbeing so to indoctrinate their youth to follow clan orders seemed like the next step to further ensure this. If a clan member performs an order in its entirety not only do they bring accolades on to themselves, but on to the clan. To disobey an order is to bring shame. CLAN ABILITIES: – Dokuso Ninpō (Toxin Ninja Art) - Shouki members have learned to imbibe poisons they create and store them within their body using chakra to contain and prevent them from harming their own bodies. They’ve also subjected themselves to their own poisons enough to build up a natural immunity. These poisons and toxins have lingered in the body infusing the chemicals into the Shouki’s blood, mucus membranes, and sweat glands. A protein has been designed within the body of the Shouki to help in this function. In order for the protein to survive in the host’s body it has also affected the Shouki’s blood pH levels. The average pH level for a Shouki is between 6.2 and 6.4, whereas the average human’s pH of 7.0 to 7.7. The protein will denature in a pH above 7.0; thus, a fluid from the Shouki's body enters the body of a non-Shouki, the protein denatures and ceases function, no longer able to sustain itself. The toxins then become free to affect the target body. The acidic nature of the Shouki's blood indicates that they should stay away from alkaline foods, such as milk; if their blood pH rises over 7.0, they will be unable to sustain the protein themselves and fall victim to their own toxins. The major ability of the Shouki is their resistance to poisons, toxins, truth serums, and other dangerous psychedelic drugs of their creation. They are completely immune to them and in fact utilize their bodies as weapons, harboring toxins to use on others. The Shouki Clan has also mastered the use of their techniques for combat oriented purposes. Their blood is famously used to taint their weapons and can poison their victims when entered into the enemy’s bloodstream. The mucus membrane that lines their esophagus allows them to poison their breath and therefore after building up chakra can blow out poisoned smog. At higher levels a shinobi of the Shouki Clan can even force chakra into their very pores, enlarging them and sending out the poison from their sweat glands. Clan members have used this technique to not just create clouds of poison, but by continuing to force out their chakra they can surround their body with toxic fumes that make Taijutsu a dangerous option for their enemies. At the highest levels their poisons become so strong that they can bypass needing to be inhaled and can directly affect a person through their skin. Generally a Shouki Clan member’s techniques involve much weaker poisons and toxins. It takes a high level of control over one’s chakra and body in order to safely store and utilize stronger and more lethal toxins. Therefore, those clan members of high ranking tend to have excellent control over their chakra. Sutairu Ryuu (Snake Style) - To reinforce their Ninpo the Shouki have also developed a style of taijutsu. The snake style is built around maintaining a low stance with fast quick striking movements like that of a snake. The user is constantly on the move circling around their opponent like a snake coiled around its prey. The user will then lash out with quick striking accurate attacks that use their fingers to strike at their opponent. The muscles along the arm and fingers are especially trained to create powerful thrusting motions with iron strong hands that can break bones and cause intense pain to their targets. Their legs are used to lash out at their enemies tripped and trapping targets so that they cannot escape and are pulled in further against the onslaught of attacks. All this is used in conjunction with the Shouki jutsu of their clan to add the element of poison to their taijutsu and permeate the air around them with gas and fumes that will eventually kill their enemies if the taijutsu does not finish them off first. In the beginning shinobi only get a small grasp of this style simply learning how to properly maneuver their arms and body. However, as they train and practice more they develop and understanding of properly placing their attacks, combining them with his Shouki jutsu, and eventually focus all their training in enhancing their speed and power to create the lightning whip like speed and powerful penetrating force. Natural Toxin Resistance - Due to all the experimentation on themselves the Shouki have adapted to have a natural resistance to poison and toxins related to poisons. Any poison or toxin like poison they are subjected to will be diluted by their natural resistance. A Shouki clansman will only suffer 1/3 the effects and for 1/3 the duration. This resistance only immediately applies to common poisons or Jutsu related to such matters. A Shouki will not immediately benefit from their resistance against Hiden techniques or personally crafted Jutsu. However, if a Shouki is subjected to such a poison on two separate occasions they will also build a resistance for that posion. This resistance though only applies to that particular application. If a Clan for example has access to multiple Hiden involving poisons or toxins then each Jutsu will require the same steps listed above for a resistance to be built. Having resistance to one doesn't apply to the rest. CLAN HIERARCHY: -- The clan is led by an elder and is supported by a council of older clansmen. These powerful figures make the laws of their clan and dictate how the clan shall move forward. For generations their policy has simply been not to move forward. Despite the losses of their own kind through their methods they believe that things are going well and keep a conservative stance on all their decisions. Their law is strictly upheld within the clan, harsh or extreme punishment to any who do not follow these laws is not unheard of. The clan’s elder’s word is absolute, followed by the three council members. These council members often have seconds who may sit in for them during unimportant council meetings or may speak on their council member’s behalf. Only an elder can contradict a council member’s command and only the combined order of all three council members can do so for the clan leader. No council member can do order another council member nor can their orders be contradicted by another council member. The heir for leadership is generally selected by popular vote by the council members of the clan. Often though the current leader will nominate a particular clansman. This nomination is treated seriously and more often than not it is the nominated clansman who becomes the next leader. When a clan council member steps down he may elect his own replacement. Only the clan leader may object to this choice. A clan council member may never become the clan leader so as to help keep them impartial where matters of the clan heir are concerned. Any clan member chosen to be either the heir or a new council member may decline though it is considered a great honor and any rejection could earn that clan member a harsh punishment for disobeying the will of the clan.
