Genjutsu & Kai
After much deliberation from our lovely staff, NRB has come up with its take on Genjutsu and Kai. So because of how broken Naruto's Genjutsu are, we have decided to set a power scale for genjutsu on the site. Instead of every genjutsu such as Demonic Illusion: Hell Viewing Technique creating intricate illusions and with such varying degrees of side effects, NRB will be nerfing the entire genjutsu category. Most D ranked to B ranked Genjutsu would only be able to create certain simple images, objects, creatures or localized AOE illusions that effects the environment. Only A ranked Genjutsu are allowed to create small scaled illusionary worlds or larger AOE Genjutsu. Instead of the canon series's hax version of illusionary worlds and shinobi being in a catatonic-like state, NRB's Genjutsu would still be illusions but appear in the real world to the affected person. When caught in a genjutsu on NRB, Shinobi would still see the regular world and still be able to act, albeit plagued by illusions only seen by them and other affected. Things such as illusionary Jutsu, weapons, animals or even people that they see could possibly be the genjutsu.
As far as using Genjutsu goes, because of how potentially broken they could become on an RP site. We've decided to have genjutsu prepped and primed, Genjutsu prepping is when the casting shinobi utilizes the genjutsu and creates\explains it, basically priming it to use in the following posts. Depending on the rank and sophistication of the genjutsu prepping could take anywhere from a few moments to several minutes. The staff decided to give Genjutsu a post limit, the stronger or more sophisticated the Genjutsu is, the longer it will take to cast. Each Genjutsu will be given its own individual prepping time upon review\approval. This is because Genjutsu is one of the more versatile styles and every genjutsu is different in its own little way. After the Genjutsu is prepped, it would then become primed and ready for use. Primmed Genjutsu will last based on rank, which will also be given upon approval. Additionally, because sight and sound based genjutsu can be abused both types of genjutsu are required to have a maximum range of affected area, more will be explained on these Genjutsu styles and the rest in the following bullet points.
The Genjutsu Types
- Sight Genjutsu - This is one of the main versions of Genjutsu, mostly used by Doujutsu but can be utilized by genjutsu specialist even without the use of Doujutsu by choosing a trigger item. Trigger Items can be anything from kunai or even the caster's hands for the opponent to look at. With Eye Contact\Sight Genjutsu, the shinobi would first prime the jutsu by either doing the hand seals, activating the doujutsu or stating somehow in the post that they are priming the Genjutsu while mentioning the trigger Item. Like every Genjutsu on NRB, the caster would also have to explain or prep the Genjutsu's effects in this post or the post that the target is affected. The opponent will not know the trigger item unless directly stated by the caster or if they have an ability that identifies Genjutsu or chakra. Once done, it is up to the defending person's reply whether or not they will be caught in the Genjutsu, if they do not specifically state they aren't looking at the person's eyes or whatever the shinobi used as the genjutsu trigger then they will be caught in the Genjutsu. Lastly, The maximum range for sight genjutsu is basically the max range a person has to be from the caster's eye's or trigger item in order for them to be affected by the Genjutsu, even if they are looking at the trigger item or shinobi.
- Example #1: Genjutsu Caster- Sasuke activated his Sharingan at the beginning of their battle, the fight had been fairly ninjutsu based, however, Sasuke planned to change this. He quickly focused chakra into his Sharingan(the Sharingan would be the Trigger item in this example), manipulating his chakra into creating a genjutsu that he hoped would end this drawn-out battle. (here is where you would explain the Genjutsu, IC this would basically be Sasuke creating the intended illusion or prepping the Genjutsu. You don't have to mention the exact range because you would\should go on to add the Jutsu used in a spoilers tab)
^------ Notice the way Sasuke focused chakra into his Sharingan on utilizing the genjutsu, basically making the eye the trigger item. Next, notice my take on how he created the actual illusion or primed the Jutsu for use. You can come up with your own way of explaining how the shinobi creates the Genjutsu, be it with his chakra, mind or whatever. So long as he creating the illusion before it is primed or ready to be cast.
Genjutsu Target\Defender - Naruto would utilize the shadow clone Jutsu before rushing Sasuke, his shadow clones all darted for the man, aiming to pin him down while the original landed the final blow. As the shadow clones aimed to pin him down, the Original would utilize the Rasengan Jutsu aiming to take down Sasuke with this final Jutsu.
^----- Because the roleplayer or Naruto didn't directly state what he was looking at, such as "aiming to slam the Rasengan into Sasuke's stomach" instead of "aiming for Sasuke or aiming to take Sasuke down" the attacker can then reply and say that the clones had indeed pinned him down, but the Original was caught in the Genjutsu. This is not only because the roleplayer didn't explicitly explain what he was looking at, but also because he would have to look at Sasuke's entire body as he rushed him or aimed "to take him down". Whereas if he said something like, aimed at his stomach or looked at his feet, he would have been fine.
Notes: Keep in mind that the Genjutsu's range also plays a big part in the situation, as Naruto could be outside of the Jutsu's maximum range in the first example, making the Jutsu ineffective, despite him having his eye's on Sasuke. Lastly, you would do the same for every trigger item as Sasuke did in the example, basically using your chakra to turn the item into the trigger.
- Sound Based\Hearing Genjutsu - Probably one of the most overpowered thing mentioned on Naruto second to Six Path's Sage Chakra. In the canon Naruto universe Sound based genjutsu manipulates their target's through the sense of hearing, creating sounds that assail their victims into a deadly trap that is almost impossible to defend against. Naruto: Rebellion will be doing Sound Jutsu slightly different. As with all Genjutsu, Sound based genjutsu will have a maximum range in which it can affect its target, this will be the actual Genjutsu's range and not the sound that trigger's its effect. The staff on NRB feels as if Sound based Genjutsu are too powerful and can be abused easily on RP sites because of sound's natural properties, such as it's range and speed it can travel. This being said, Sound based Genjutsu can only create auditory hallucination such as manipulating what the target is actually hearing, stopping sound altogether or "enhancing" the hearing or sounds the target makes to the point of it being painful. Additionally, certain Genjutsu that uses sounds created from the victim or the two shinobi clashing isn't allowed, this means using the sound that is created from two kunai or swords meeting or the voice of your opponent.
- Example # 1 - Tayuya focused chakra into her lungs as she quickly moved her flute to her mouth, she would then flood the flute with chakra and air as she made a set of notes, initiating her Genjutsu(this could be Tayuya prepping the Jutsu or ICly making the illusion for it to be cast, remember to explain what the Genjutsu does in this post or in the post that the opponent is affected, that's if you manage to do so. Also, keep in mind your prepping limit. If Tayuya is using an A ranked genjutsu she would have to hold that note longer while trying to stay unharmed)
^----- Sound based Genjutsu is one of the hardest techniques to defend against, this is why the staff decided to nerf the entire sub-category's abilities to only creating auditory illusions or hallucinations. The staff feels that because how easily a shinobi could be affected by these genjutsu, their abilities should not be fatal in the least. This would balance out the entire Sub-category. There are only a few ways one could defend against this type of Genjutsu besides Kai, the first being Doujutsu that is able to see chakra, because Tayuya focused chakra into the sound wave's emitted by her flute, the Doujutsu would be able to see the chakra within them, allowing the shinobi to not enter the affected area. The second way to defend against these type of genjutsu is to disrupt the user's concentration when prepping or disrupting the sound that's being created. However, the main way to defend against these Jutsu is the use of Kai or your own RPing skills.
- Sense of Smell Based Genjutsu - This type of Genjutsu is triggered by affecting the target's sense of smell. As far as Smell goes, we have decided to treat these Genjutsu the same as we did with the Sound Based Genjutsu. They will have a maximum range an opponent can be affected, despite the smell traveling further. Like with Sound genjutsu, this range will be the maximum range of the Genjutsu itself and not the smell that triggers the Jutsu. Smell-based Genjutsu however, won't have the same reach as sound or sight based Genjutsu. Additionally, smell-based Genjutsu's abilities aren't as nerfed as the Smell-based Catagory because of it's decreased range. That being said Sound Based Genjutsu can create a variety of illusions based on NRB's take on the entire category.
- Touch Based Genjutsu - As the name states this sub-category of Genjutsu is triggered by the sense of Touch. Touch-based Genjutsu is different than the others as it's fairly balanced even without NRB's take on Genjutsu, this is because touch-based genjutsu is mostly limited to close combat range. NRB's stance on prepping and priming Genjutsu also apply to this category, touch-based Genjutsu will be prepped and prime like any other Genjutsu. However, this sub-category heavily revolves around trigger items. Because this type of Genjutsu uses the sense of touch, most shinobi's use their hands or weapons as the trigger item. This makes touch-based Genjutsu fairly limited to close combat range, however, some Genjutsu specialists are known to turn certain objects in their environment into the trigger item or even use throwing weapons to increase their effective range.
- Taste Based Genjutsu - Taste based Genjutsu is one of the hardest Genjutsu's to perform as it takes a great amount of effort to force or trick a shinobi into tasting whatever the trigger item is. That being said, Taste based Genjutsu has the least amount of range, but won't be nerfed as Sound Based Genjutsu is. However, Taste based Genjutsu can come in handy in and out of battle and is usually used during the most complicated of assassination missions. This isn't to say lower ranked shinobi aren't able to perform these type of Genjutsu, however, Taste based Genjutsu shows it's true powers in the form of deception. Tricking or manipulating the opponent into eating or even forcing a slight taste of the trigger item to induce a Genjutsu.
Kai & Genjutsu Release Rules
In this section of the Genjutsu thread, I'll be going over how to defend and release Genjutsu. There are two traditional ways to combat Genjutsu. The first option is for the ninja to stop the flow of chakra in their body, and then apply an even stronger power to disrupt the flow of the caster's chakra. This can also be done by an unaffected ninja, this method is known as Genjutsu Kai and will be explained further. The second option is for the affected ninja to inflict pain himself or by another shinobi, additionally, there are less traditional means of escaping or defending again a Genjutsu, such as the Uchiha or Hyuuga clan who can break or see through genjutsu through the use of their Doujutsu, Jinchuriki's Bijuu can break their jinchūriki out of genjutsu in a similar fashion to Kai, if they have a good enough cooperation, there's even Jutsu that could hinder ocular genjutsu as well. I'll briefly go over the traditional ways of defending and escaping Jutsu in this section, as they will be the most used. At the end of this section will be a few rules on Releasing Genjutsu and using Kai.
- Traditional Pain Release - One of the main two ways to release a Genjutsu is through the use of pain. Once the shinobi has identified that they are in a Genjutsu, they could inflict a wound to themselves and utilize the resulting pain to bring their senses back in order. However, if the affected shinobi have been taken over by the Genjutsu itself, their allies or with luck even their enemies could cause the pain to bring release the genjutsu. Of the two traditional ways, this way is usually more effective in most situations, or, at least, is the quickest. It should that this method requires an intense amount of pain for it to be successful, this doesn't mean that you have to maim your shinobi, however, we won't tolerate shinobi accidentally tripping and releasing a genjutsu.
- Genjutsu: Kai | Genjutsu Release - Genjutsu: Kai or as we like to simply call, "Kai" is the nonharmful option for combatting genjutsu. To use Kai, the shinobi has to stop the flow of chakra in their body, and then apply an even stronger surge to disrupt the flow of the genjutsu user's chakra; this can also be done by an unaffected shinobi by applying a sudden surge of chakra into the affected person.
- Rank|Speciality: Releasing Genjutsu has a number of different factors besides being able to use kai or inflicting pain upon yourself. One being rank, shinobi of lower rank would have a harder time identifying the minute differences between the illusion and the real thing, This would make using kai nearly impossible as they wouldn't know they were in a Genjutsu unless outside influences acted for them. Additionally, the strength or rank of the Jutsu itself would also determine how hard it would be for your shinobi to realize it is affected, IE fewer errors in the illusion itself. It should also be noted that the amount of chakra used to disrupt the Genjutsu using kai, depends on the rank and strength of the Genjutsu, the higher the rank, the more chakra it would cost to dispell. Another factor would be the specialty, Genjutsu Speciality comes into play when two Rpers are forced to forgo overall rank for whatever reason. The two roleplayers would then go by their character's individual skill with Genjutsu itself, for example, a Chunin with a B rank in Genjutsu would find it easier to release genjutsu of that rank, despite not being B ranked overall.
Automatic Genjutsu Realization Hax: First things First, When using Kai or trying to break out of any Genjutsu. The affected shinobi must come to the realization that they are under the illusion. The staff has personally seen this fact being abused, with genin freely breaking from Genjutsu without stating what tipped them off that they were affected. Basically, if your shinobi is affected by a Genjutsu, you can not automatically "know" that you are being affected by it. Unless there is a logical circumstance such a Doujutsu or even plot related tidbits of information. An example of this would be a hastily prepped Genjutsu that was intended to recreate a certain environment. Your affected Shinobi could notice the small errors in detail, which would then allow them to "put two and two together". After stating what made your shinobi realize or having your shinobi coming to the realization of them being in a genjutsu while explaining what brought this on, then you would be able to use Kai and release the effects of the illusion.
Super Sensitive Pain Receptor Hax: As stated above, NRB will not tolerate Shinobi easily escaping a Genjutsu with a minor wound that barely inflicts pain. That being said, its only common sense that low ranked Genjutsu wouldn't need as much pain as let us say a C or B ranked Genjutsu, however, let's keep in mind people that these characters are ninja, and while you might be a Genin, and vulnerable, It'll still take more than them tripping, bumping their heads or a punch to the face to break a Genjutsu.
