Birth of the Shinobi World
The Beginning
Before there was humanity there was only chakra; the primordial force that sparked life into existence countless millennia ago. in the beginning of humanity, when the human race was still in its infancy, the world was at peace. the first humans worshiped chakra as a deity and bringer of life. this practice would eventually become the religion known as ninshū, founded by the first humans to understand and teach the mystery of chakra. the teachings of ninshū were meant to give people a better understanding of themselves, as well as others, and lead the expanding world into an era of peace. as the human race expanded so did many other aspects of the world, many of the humans spread across the world creating clans and claiming lands for themselves, with the entire race eventually beginning to prosper and dominate the entire world. as these aspects of human life expanded so did the negative aspects of the human individual, soon greed, envy and hate would etch its way into the life of humans and ultimately shape the world into what it is today.
These negative emotions would eventually turn into conflict that would then turn into war and once this began the peaceful world that once stood came crumbling down as the first humans and their successors would unexpectedly bring about the rise of ninjutsu and the birth of the bloodiest era in shinobi history. the era, which is presently known as the "age of endless wars" was when the first human discovered ninjutsu. at the beginning of this era, a man sought to bring the finality of peace to the world. a monk whom had devoted his life to the study and teachings of ninshū sought to spread the word of this magnificent power to the world. the man was known as hagoromo otsutsuki, an old sage known as the ‘hermit of ninshu’ and was the official leader of the sect of ninshu. the sage's efforts at peace were fruitful. his teachings spread like wildfire and peace and love were victorious over bitter and hardened hearts.
This lasted for years until the sage entered the last stage of life, and would have to choose a successor. the man would have only two sons during his long life, one named ashura, the other indra, both sons were devoted followers of the sect and had become great warriors in an attempt to quell the fighting in their search for peace. however, after being passed over as the successor of ninshū for his brother, indra would eventually fall prey to the negative emotions that haunted all humans, thus breeding envy and hate towards his brother. in time indra's love for his brother and father would turn into hate as his jealousy grew. his hate eventually ended up boiling over resulting in the brothers fighting, with indra unintentionally weaponizing his chakra. it was hagoromo's belief that no one's chakra should be so much greater than any other. if the power is accumulated into one person, then it increases the possibility that the person will become arrogant and desire even more power. using this teaching, indra found a way to connect his inner spiritual and physical energies together, thus creating ninjutsu. both brothers died fighting over the title of the successor of ninshū, but not before having offspring and leaving followers behind, paving the way for the world of shinobi.
Formation Wars Era
So, for as long as there has been humanity, there has been war. the reasons that lead to war always change with the time, however it is always the inevitable and eventual outcome of all conflicts. despite how much war there was in the world, the humans would continue to live on and adapt to the ever growing cycle of death. centuries after the deaths of otsutsuki ashura and his brother indra, ninshū would become not even a myth or child's tale as ninjutsu took it's place in the world. with the death of ninshū and the rise of ninjutsu, the shinobi world would be born. the earliest humans had settled throughout the world long ago, their ancestors would go on to become shinobi clans, some of these clans having powerful abilities either passed down through blood or taught from generation to generation.
During this era, which became known as the ‘The Formation Wars Era', the countries of the new world were small and were formed from the ruins of the first nations created by the early society. The leaders of the nations would be called Daimyo. The nations would become known as The Land of Fire, The Land of Wind, Land of Water, Land of Lightning and land of earth. These countries were constantly vying for land, power, and opportunity. To fight their battles, the countries hired the infamous shinobi clans born from the progenitor of ninjutsu, otsutsuki indra, and the devout ninshū leader, otsutsuki ashura. the shinobi clans would represent the countries interests, with the shinobi's loyalties ultimately going to the highest bidder. the constant warfare led to constant death, creating an very small lifespan for shinobi and civilian alike. children were the greatest victims of this era, most being forced to fight for their clan no differently than an adult would and more often than not, being killed by older and more skilled opponents.
As the world continued in its endless cycle of death, the negative emotions that had been planted after the death of ashura and indra would soon blossom, as hatred spread across the lands. soon this negative emotion had grown strong enough to even affect the primordial force behind ninjutsu known as chakra. not only did the chakra of individuals take on their negative emotions, but so did those surrounding them. as mankind fought countless battles, leaving the earth soaked in blood, the very force that fueled their lives and power would become corrupt and warp into a horrible being, wielding vast amounts of chakra capable of obliterating almost anything. this monster would become known as entity known as the juubi, or ten-tails, which ravaged the land in an attempt to reclaim the chakra that had given life to humans so long ago.
War of the Gokage
The juubi held unimaginable amounts of chakra and destructive ability, and the monster had appeared in a unknown location starting its rampage. most nations had turned a blind eye, as they didn’t see it as their problem, however this quickly changed as the beast was able to destroy anything and everything in its path, even entire nations. the daimyo of each country would ultimately call upon all the clans of their respective nations to disregard their years of animosities and band together to destroy a foe that could eventually kill them all. initially, the fight seemed pointless as the shinobi were quickly and easily dispatched by their enemy. the clans of each nation sent shinobi after shinobi to quell the beasts rage but none of their efforts were successful. after this and when all seemed lost, the strongest shinobi from all of the nations would eventually band together to rid the world of the monster that had threatened humanity.
These group of five strongest shinobi the humans had to offer would be adopt the name kage, literally meaning ‘shadow’. these individuals would name themselves according to their nation, the hokage or fire shadow hailed from hi no kuni, the raikage or lighting shadow hailed from kaminari no kuni, the kazekage or wind shadow from kaze no kuni, while the tsuchikage or earth shadow and mizukage or water shadow claimed tsuchi no kuni and mizu no kuni respectively. these 5 nations together were known as the gokage, the five shadows, and were renowned as the five strongest shinobi the world had to offer. the gokage and their allies lead a large scale war against the beast. their initial encounters ended in failure as the juubi was simply too powerful to be destroyed. the only solution was to somehow split the chakra of the beast into smaller portions and release it into the world, hoping it would return to its original state as non-corrupted chakra.
The gokage worked together to come up with ways that this could happen and how it would work. together they came up with the incredible yin-yang release that could alter reality as they saw fit. they proceeded to create a jutsu called ‘the creation of all things’, which was immensely powerful. however, none of the kage were individually powerful enough to initiate the complex and powerful jutsu alone. to remedy this, they decided that they would need to work together to make sure that the jutsu was done properly. upon meeting the juubi in battle a final time the gokage would use their combined might to use ‘the creation of all things’ jutsu to forcefully split the chakra of the juubi into nine pieces. this act left them completely drained and on the verge of death. before the gokage would succumb to the sudden and large amount of chakra loss, they made sure that the shinobi that witnessed the event passed on their dying message. they wished the next generation to learn from the failures of their predecessors. telling them that because of the constant bloodshed and hate, the primordial force known as chakra had warped into the beast that they had vanquished. they went along to add that this was the sin of their past transgressions. those who witnessed the act stated that the juubi then disappeared into nine bolts of different colors that shot off into varying directions as the gokage lay taking in their last breaths.
With the gokage dead and the juubi seemingly returned to its original state, the shinobi who had lived to pass on the last message of the dying gokage would do so to honor those who gave their lives for the rest of humanity. they urged the five nations to keep the legacy of the gokage alive, by following their example and uniting the clans of each nation. these events ultimately lead to the creation of the hidden villages, with the former gokage becoming the de facto founders of each village, with their successors adopting their former titles.
In an attempt to avoid the senseless death of the past and to ensure stronger generations of shinobi, the shinobi villages of each nation would go on to create a shinobi organization system. While the system varied from nation to nation the general organisational structure and hierarchy of the ninja systems of each nation were about the same. the actual shinobi forces of the clans would soon divided into three groups as the organization system became universal. these three groups would become known as the regular forces, the medical teams and the covert ops squad or ‘anbu’.
Simply put, younger shinobi who weren't fit for real combat were known as academy students, and after learning the basics they usually became a part of their clans forces, assuming the rank of junior ninja or ‘genin’. via various exams and tests, they would be promoted to higher ranks, first to chūnin and then jōnin after that. by this rank of jōnin they would be skilled enough to join either of the other shinobi organisational groups, depending on their abilities. this system would increase the life expectancy of all the inhabitants, because of the introduction of shinobi ranks and medical shinobi, however this did nothing to lower the death toll, only allowing people to live longer in a hell that was worse than death.
However it wasn't long before the shinobi descended into chaos. with the gokage gone, the five shinobi villages they left behind continued on under new leadership. the new kage had their own agendas they pursued in addition to the legacy they were entrusted to uphold. they lost sight of the warning given to them by the gokage. greed, corruption and chaos quickly took hold yet again as the five shinobi villages broke ties with one another and focused on their individual populations.
After the war against the juubi and the consequent creation of the shinobi villages, the new gokage and their allied villages were approached by the respective daimyo of their land in search for help. multiple nations were victims of rampaging demons known as known as bijuu. these demons were sentient creatures with massive chakra created from the chakra that was once the juubi. however, these creatures created from the juubi weren't like that of the juubi who only wished to reclaim the chakra of humans. instead they were all sentient beings who inhabited the world. fearing the bijuu to be akin to its progenitor, the gokage and their allies lead a large scale hunt for the bijuu. because of this, humanity failed to recognize the tailed beasts as intelligent individuals, instead seeing them only as monsters, demons, or mindless beasts worthy of fear and disdain; because of their immense power, the tailed beasts were sought out by humans to be used as weapons in times of war. the beasts resented this treatment and came to hate humans, at times willingly becoming the monsters they were so commonly viewed as.
